Russia’s Diplomatic Contradictions: Azerbaijani MP’s Entry Denied Amid Calls for Friendship

Moscow: Although the Russian Federation has been advocating for integration and fostering friendship in post-Soviet regions, its actions often contradict these calls. A recent incident highlighting this discrepancy is the denial of entry to Azerbaijani Member of Parliament Azar Badamov during his visit to Astrakhan, which underscores a significant contradiction in Russia’s diplomatic approach.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Badamov was detained at Moscow airport and subsequently deported without any explanation. He was on his way to attend an event organized by the Russian side, making this incident a new chapter in the ongoing crisis of trust between the two nations. This act, beyond being diplomatically unethical, carries political symbolism that cannot be ignored.

Member of Azerbaijani Parliament Sahib Aliyev expressed his concerns to APA, stating that the refusal to allow MP Azar Badamov into Russia contradicts the spirit of friendship and represents an illogical step with potentially harmful consequences for Russia. Aliyev emphasized that Badamov was part of a delegation invited by the Vice-Governor of the Astrakhan region, Denis Afanasyev, and questioned why Badamov was not notified in advance if he was considered persona-non-grata.

Aliyev further highlighted the inconsistency of this action, especially in light of the recent visit by Patriarch Kirill to Baku, where mutual dialogue and sincere relations were emphasized. He criticized the decision as contradictory and unfriendly, drawing parallels to past incidents that have strained relations between the two countries.

The Azerbaijani Parliament, according to Aliyev, has maintained a respectful stance towards Russia, refraining from actions or statements that would undermine Russia’s territorial integrity or insult its people. This restraint is not born out of fear, Aliyev noted, but from a recognition of Azerbaijan’s commitment to decency, honor, and dignified diplomacy, which he believes will ultimately prevail in strengthening Azerbaijan’s geopolitical standing.
