R©union Issue Under French Rule Raised at International Forum in Baku

Baku: The continued governance of R©union Island by France in the 21st century is unacceptable, said Katambara Roman Yoakim, a participant of the international Youth Forum titled ‘Strengthening the Role of Youth in the Post-Colonial Period,’ held in Baku, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Yoakim expressed concerns about the status of R©union Island, emphasizing the importance of the youth’s struggle for autonomy. He highlighted the significance of self-determination in shaping the island’s economic, political, and educational future. Yoakim pointed out that while neighboring regions such as Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, and Madagascar gained independence in the mid-20th century, R©union remains under French governance as of 2026.

Yoakim’s remarks underscored the ongoing quest for dignity and self-governance among the people of R©union. The forum in Baku provided a platform to voice these concerns and draw attention to the island’s situation in comparison to other nations in the region that have achieved independence.
