Baku: President of the European Council Ant³nio Costa held a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on August 14, as reported by APA citing the Press Service of the President.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Ant³nio Costa congratulated President Aliyev on several significant developments, including the signing of a Declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia witnessed by the U.S. President in Washington, the initialing of an Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations, as well as progress on the regional transport corridor. Costa underscored the importance of these agreements for ensuring peace and stability in the region and expressed the European Union’s readiness to support their implementation.
President Ilham Aliyev, in response, expressed his gratitude for the congratulations and emphasized Azerbaijan’s role in initiating the peace agenda and authoring the peace agreement text. He highlighted the importance of the achievements in Washington and acknowledged the special role of U.S. President Donald Trump in facilitating these outcomes. Aliyev also noted the significance of the agreement on unhindered transport connectivity between Azerbaijan’s mainland and its Nakhchivan region.
During the conversation, both leaders recalled the positive discussions held during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the “European Political Union” Summit in Tirana in May. President Aliyev and Ant³nio Costa also exchanged views on the future of Azerbaijan-EU relations and other mutual concerns.
