New york: In his address at the UN General Assembly, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the transformative phase Azerbaijan has entered following the 44-day Patriotic War, emphasizing the political, economic, and security dynamics now shaping the region. President Aliyev articulated how Azerbaijan has transitioned from a prolonged period of conflict to a new era of peace and development.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, President Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s legal and political stance, referencing Article 51 of the UN Charter to justify Azerbaijan’s right to self-defense after ineffective negotiations spanning three decades. He underscored Azerbaijan’s compliance with international humanitarian law during the conflict, contrasting it with Armenia’s actions during the war.
President Aliyev stressed the ideological significance of Azerbaijan’s victory and the country’s commitment to peace initiatives post-conflict. He highlighted the diplomatic progress achieved through negotiations held between 2022 and 2025, culminating in the initialing of a peace treaty in Washington in August 2025.
The President also addressed the evolving Azerbaijan-US relations, particularly the ‘Trump Roadmap for International Peace and Prosperity’ (TRIPP) established during the Washington Summit. This initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and fortify Azerbaijan-US ties through a Memorandum of Understanding that sets the groundwork for a Strategic Partnership Charter.
Post-conflict reconstruction efforts form a cornerstone of Azerbaijan’s agenda, with the ‘Great Return’ program prioritizing redevelopment of liberated territories. However, the pervasive threat of landmines and the unresolved status of approximately 4,000 missing Azerbaijanis present ongoing humanitarian challenges.
In terms of energy and sustainable development, Azerbaijan’s strategic role as a key partner in global energy security was underscored. The country is focused on integrating the Caspian region into international markets while investing in renewable energy sources, thereby aiming for a balanced transition towards sustainable energy production.
Azerbaijan’s strategic location as a logistics and transport hub was highlighted, with projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the ‘Digital Silk Road’ underscoring its pivotal role in Eurasian connectivity and digital integration.
Economic reforms and social progress have yielded positive outcomes, with Azerbaijan achieving low rates of poverty and unemployment. The country’s favorable investment climate and economic stability have been recognized by international rating agencies, with Azerbaijan receiving improved ratings from ‘Moody’s’ and ‘Fitch’.
President Aliyev’s address at the UN outlined Azerbaijan’s strategic vision for the future, focusing on strengthening sovereignty, fostering regional and global integration, and maintaining its role as a reliable partner in sustainable development and energy security.
