Baku: On July 12, Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, held an expanded meeting with Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Transitional President of the Syrian Arab Republic.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the meeting served as a platform to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations, following a period of stagnation due to the previous Syrian government’s unfriendly policies towards Azerbaijan.
President Aliyev expressed hope that Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s visit would significantly contribute to the development of Azerbaijan-Syria relations. He highlighted the potential for advancing ties with the establishment of the new Syrian government. Reflecting on a visit by an Azerbaijani delegation to Syria, Aliyev noted that discussions focused on projects aimed at strengthening cooperation across various sectors.
Ahmad Al-Sharaa recalled his previous meeting with President Aliyev during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum and expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s support to Syria. He acknowledged the damage caused by the previous Syrian government to its international relations and affirmed Syria’s interest in collaborating with Azerbaijan in political, economic, trade, cultural, and humanitarian areas. He also congratulated Azerbaijan on its achievements and territorial liberation.
The meeting underscored the importance of cooperation in the energy sector, especially in light of Syria’s severe energy challenges. Plans to export Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Trkiye were discussed, along with Azerbaijan’s potential role in restoring Syria’s energy sector. The parties also explored collaboration in the humanitarian, educational, and cultural fields, highlighting scholarships for Syrian students and the restoration of cultural monuments.
Azerbaijan’s experience in reconstruction and restoration of its liberated territories was considered beneficial for Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction. Other mutual interests were also discussed during the meeting.
Following the expanded meeting, President Aliyev and Transitional President Al-Sharaa engaged in a limited format meeting, furthering their dialogue on these significant issues.
