Pakistani Expert Highlights Azerbaijan’s Potential as a Regional Leader in Green Energy

Baku: Azerbaijan is poised to become a regional leader in green energy, as highlighted by Khalid Taimur Akram, a renowned Pakistani expert in international relations, in his interview with AZERTAC. Akram commended Azerbaijan’s national energy strategy, which aligns closely with global energy transition trends.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Akram emphasized the ambitious yet realistic target set by Azerbaijan to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 30% of the total installed electricity generation capacity by 2030. He noted the strong political commitment and international partnerships that reflect Azerbaijan’s dedication to these goals.

Akram highlighted the impressive estimated technical potential of renewable energy in Azerbaijan, with 135 GW onshore and 157 GW offshore, particularly in wind and solar energy. This positions Azerbaijan as a future leader in clean energy for both domestic use and regional electricity exports. Although the technical potential cannot be realized immediately, it provides a solid foundation for long-term planning and investor confidence.

He praised the designation of Karabakh, East Zangezur, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic as “green energy zones,” with significant renewable potential in these regions. This decision creates opportunities for sustainable reconstruction and modern energy development, integrating renewable energy into post-conflict recovery efforts.

From a policy and investment perspective, Azerbaijan has made significant strides, including agreements with international energy companies, improvements in energy legislation, and the introduction of competitive mechanisms to strengthen the investment climate. Akram noted that technological barriers are decreasing as global costs for solar and wind technologies fall.

Successful implementation of these targets depends on continued policy stability, timely grid infrastructure development, access to international financing, and strong institutional coordination. Capacity building and local workforce development are also crucial for achieving these goals.

In conclusion, Akram affirmed the credibility and achievability of Azerbaijan’s renewable energy targets, asserting that with steadfast commitment and effective execution, Azerbaijan can become a regional leader in green energy and contribute to global climate and energy transition goals.
