Baku: The official website of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has published an article by Haitham Al Ghais, OPEC Secretary General, marking the 65th anniversary of the organization.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the article recounts the pivotal role OPEC has played since its founding at the historic Baghdad Conference in September 1960 by visionary leaders from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait. These leaders united despite differing objectives to assert control over their oil industries, previously dominated by powerful international oil companies, and to secure fair economic returns for their countries.
The foundation of OPEC marked a significant shift in global oil policies, as the organization sought to unify petroleum policies among member countries. This initiative aimed to safeguard the interests of oil-producing nations and ensure a steady income through market stability. Over the decades, OPEC expanded its influence, establishing landmark agreements in the 1970s that realigned the oil industry towards a more balanced relationship between producers and consumers.
Despite facing challenges and criticisms over the years, OPEC has maintained its significance in the global economy. Research from KAPSARC and the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies highlights OPEC’s crucial role in market stabilization and its economic benefits, such as mitigating supply shocks that could severely impact global GDP.
OPEC’s commitment to energy security and market stability remains steadfast as it continues to engage in international energy dialogues and collaborations, including the OPEC-plus agreement formed in 2016. Looking to the future, OPEC anticipates a rise in oil demand and stresses the importance of a holistic approach to energy development, balancing economic, social, and environmental factors.
As OPEC celebrates its 65th anniversary, Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais expresses gratitude to the organization’s member countries and leaders for their contributions. He reaffirms OPEC’s ongoing role as a stabilizing force in the energy industry, emphasizing its enduring relevance and commitment to addressing future energy challenges.
