Baku: Moldova is actively exploring opportunities to participate in regional initiatives to purchase gas from Azerbaijan, as stated by Moldovan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Alexander Esaulenko in an interview with APA. Energy cooperation is deemed crucial between the two nations.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, following the large-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, Moldova quickly diversified its gas and electricity sources. The country synchronized with the European ENTSO-E system, increased supplies through Romania, and expanded its use of the European gas market along with the infrastructure of neighboring countries.
In this context, Azerbaijan is considered a key potential partner for Moldova in the supply of natural gas and ‘green energy.’ Moldova is currently in discussions about participating in regional initiatives that involve gas purchases from multiple suppliers, including Azerbaijan. Additionally, Moldova is looking into the possibility of joining a ‘green’ electricity export project involving Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and the EU.
Esaulenko also noted that Moldova is considering ways to utilize gas storage facilities and interconnectors as part of a broader regional energy security architecture. The country’s goal is to integrate into a stable, diversified energy system, with Azerbaijan playing a significant role.
