Baku: The electricity interconnection planned between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Trkiye, and Bulgaria will enable Azerbaijan’s electricity to be transmitted toward Europe, Trkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, stated while addressing journalists’ questions at the 5th Azerbaijan-Trkiye Energy Forum.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the minister described the project as the ‘electric version of TANAP.’ Bayraktar elaborated that this interconnection project is being developed among the four countries, primarily focusing on delivering electricity generated in Azerbaijan to Georgia, then to Trkiye, and finally to Bulgaria. He mentioned that preparations for this significant ‘green energy’ initiative began during COP29 held in Baku in 2024.
Bayraktar explained that the project’s initial phase involves utilizing the existing electricity infrastructure. He highlighted the current 700 MW of interconnection capacity between Trkiye and Georgia, which is already operational, as well as the electricity connection between Trkiye and Bulgaria. The minister also noted the ongoing efforts to establish the Nakhchivan-Trkiye interconnection and explore interconnection opportunities between Azerbaijan and Georgia. The aim is to develop the project incrementally, leveraging the existing infrastructure and eventually enhancing transmission capacities.
Additionally, Bayraktar emphasized the potential for broader regional connectivity by linking the project with agreements between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan in the field of ‘green energy.’ He suggested that such collaborations could effectively connect the entire Turkic world.
