Latvia and U.S. Enhance Military Ties with Naval Strike Missile Agreement

Riga: The leadership of the defense sector of Latvia, including State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Aivars Purin€š¬¦¡ and Commander of the National Armed Forces Major General Kaspars Pudans, recently held discussions with U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) Commander General Randall Reed during his working visit to Latvia.

According to Trend News Agency, the meeting addressed Latvia’s future cooperation with the U.S. Armed Forces, focusing on logistics and transportation, the conduct of the international military exercise Swift Response 2025 in Latvia, and the development of dual-use logistics infrastructure. U.S. Transportation Command plays a crucial role in providing logistics support to various U.S. military units and defense agencies.

The cooperation between Latvia and the United States has been a priority within Latvia’s bilateral defense relations. Since 2014, U.S. armed forces have been deployed rotationally in the Baltic States as part of the Atlantic Resolve training operation, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to the collective security of NATO member states.

Military cooperation between the countries has seen significant growth, highlighted by large-scale procurements of military equipment. In December 2023, Latvia and the U.S. signed a contract for the acquisition of Naval Strike Missile systems, valued at USD 105 million, produced by Raytheon and Kongsberg. Latvia also signed an agreement for six HIMARS artillery rocket systems from Lockheed Martin, expected to be delivered starting in 2027.

In 2018, Latvia and the U.S. signed an agreement for four UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, which are integral to both military and civilian operations.
