Accra:Baku Thong Thammalat, a 67-year-old former student from Laos, recently revisited Azerbaijan, describing his return after 43 years as a homecoming. Thammalat, who studied at the Baku Oil and Energy College under the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University from 1978 to 1983, is now the General Secretary of the Lao Fuel and Gas Association and a committee member of the Laos-Azerbaijan Friendship Association.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Thammalat fondly recalled his years in Azerbaijan, attributing his professional success to the education he received there. Though initially unaware of his destination within the Soviet Union, Thammalat was warmly welcomed by fellow Lao students in Azerbaijan. He expressed appreciation for the kindness and hospitality of the Azerbaijani people, which left a lasting impression on him.
During his recent visit, Thammalat noted Azerbaijan’s significant development over the past four decades, evolving into a prosperous nation with an important international presence. Despite these changes, he highlighted the unchanged warmth and friendliness of the Azerbaijani people.
Thammalat believes that the personal experiences of Laotians who studied in Azerbaijan can enhance bilateral relations. He organizes annual reunions for former Lao students, which have been attended by Azerbaijani dignitaries, further strengthening ties between the two countries. To encourage younger generations, Thammalat is committed to promoting educational opportunities in Azerbaijan and suggests cultural exchanges like organizing Azerbaijani and Lao Cultural Weeks to deepen mutual understanding.
