Bishkek: Social media companies are being urged to establish offices in the member countries of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), according to Zarina Kalmuratova, a senior specialist at the Kyrgyz Ministry of Culture, Information and Youth’s Information Policy Department. She made this call during the Media Forum of the Organisation of Turkic States, as reported by APA.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Kalmuratova emphasized the significance of improving media literacy, noting that it should extend beyond merely distinguishing disinformation from real information. She raised important questions regarding the content that can be reported and highlighted. In Kyrgyzstan, a law aimed at protecting against fake information has been in effect for three years. While registered information agencies face penalties for spreading disinformation against legal entities, no such measures can be taken when disinformation circulates through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. Consequently, Kalmuratova advocates for social media companies to establish a presence in OTS member countries to address this issue.
