International Fugitive Extradited from Albania to Azerbaijan

Baku:An Azerbaijani national, internationally wanted for alleged embezzlement, has been detained in Albania and extradited back to Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Justice informed that Elchin Abdulkhaligov was arrested after being located in Albania.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Abdulkhaligov had been placed on an international wanted list by Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Azerbaijan. His arrest followed a determination of his whereabouts in Albania.

The allegations against Abdulkhaligov date back to 2020, during his tenure as a sales specialist at “GP Stock Feed” LLC. He is accused of collecting cash payments amounting to AZN 78,000 from distributors, which were meant for the company’s treasury, and misappropriating them for personal use. Consequently, he faces charges under Article 179.3.2 of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code, relating to large-scale misappropriation or embezzlement.

The extradition process was initiated upon a request by Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office and involved negotiations leading to an agreement for his return. On October 29, Abdulkhaligov was escorted to Azerbaijan by officials from the Ministry of Justice’s Main Directorate for International Cooperation and the Penitentiary Service.

Upon arrival, Abdulkhaligov was placed in a pre-trial detention center as ordered by the court.
