Gunay Afandiyeva Highlights the Strategic Importance of the Zangezur Corridor for the Turkic World

Baku: Gunay Afandiyeva, a deputy of the Milli Majlis and Deputy Chair of the Culture Committee, elaborated on the geopolitical shifts in the South Caucasus following the signing of the Joint Declaration in Washington and the dissolution of the Minsk Group.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the trilateral meeting on August 8, 2025, in Washington led to the signing of a Joint Declaration between Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, marking a significant turning point for the region. This agreement, alongside a proposed dissolution of the Minsk Group, underscores the international community’s recognition of Azerbaijan’s peace efforts. The termination of the Minsk Group by the OSCE Ministerial Council reflects Azerbaijan’s strengthened diplomatic position in the region.

Afandiyeva emphasized that Armenia’s compliance with the agreement is crucial. Any deviation could damage its international standing and lead to diplomatic isolation. The peace agreement, supported by global powers like the United States and the European Union, aims to foster stability and collaboration in the region. Azerbaijan’s stance is firm on maintaining its sovereignty and advancing its national interests.

The President’s interview with Al Arabiya highlighted Azerbaijan’s historical struggles and its current diplomatic achievements. The President reiterated the significance of the Zangezur Corridor, which aims to transform the South Caucasus into a major trade and transport hub, linking East and West. The corridor is expected to strengthen the unity among Turkic countries and elevate their geopolitical influence.

Afandiyeva also pointed out the growing role of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) as a platform for cooperation among countries sharing historical and cultural ties. Recent collaborations, such as agreements between Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, reflect a deepening integration in areas like trade, transport, and reconstruction efforts in Karabakh.

The OTS is becoming increasingly prominent on the global stage, attracting interest from new partners. Azerbaijan’s involvement in the OTS is guided by its cultural heritage and commitment to unity, aligning with its strategic goals for regional cooperation. The strategic agreements within the OTS are seen as roadmaps for future solidarity and collaboration in the Turkic world.
