Groundbreaking Ceremony for Desalination Plant in the Caspian Sea Revealed


Baku: The date for laying the foundation stone for the desalination plant in the Caspian Sea has been announced, Selim Gven, Country Manager for Trkiye and Azerbaijan at ACWA Power, stated in an interview with APA’s Trkiye bureau.



According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the project is progressing with bathymetric, diffusion, and other engineering and technical studies being conducted to ensure compliance with international standards and all environmental and social requirements in the Caspian Sea. Selim Gven highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, with engineering and technical research work currently being carried out on-site for the desalination plant.



Gven explained that after the studies are completed, the prepared reports will be submitted to the banks. The financial close is expected approximately in the third quarter, after which construction will commence with a groundbreaking ceremony. The plan is for the first water delivery to occur 24 months after the start of construction, with the plant reaching full capacity six months later.



The project timeline includes the operation of the substation in June 2028, with full-capacity operations planned for December 2028. The entire project is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2028, serving the Republic of Azerbaijan.
