Paris: The US invasion of Venezuela and the seizure of the president are contrary to international law and could have serious consequences for global security, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Barrot emphasized that the military operation leading to the capture of Nicolas Maduro contradicts the principle of non-use of force, a cornerstone of international law. He asserted that France believes no sustainable political solution can be imposed from outside, and that sovereign nations should determine their own future.
Barrot did criticize the Venezuelan president’s policies but affirmed that Paris supports respect for the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people, stating that “their voice should prevail.” He highlighted that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the United States has been awarded special responsibility, and any violation of the non-use of force principle by such members “will have grave consequences for global security that no one can avoid.”
He concluded by reaffirming Paris’s commitment to the UN Charter and called upon all states to adhere to it.
