First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva Visits Europe’s Largest Pediatric Hospital Bambino Ges¹

Rome: First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva visited Europe’s largest pediatric hospital, Bambino Ges¹, APA reports. During her visit on October 16, Aliyeva explored the hospital’s advanced molecular genetics and clinical diagnostics laboratories.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the President of Bambino Ges¹ Pediatric Hospital, Tiziano Onesti, provided Mehriban Aliyeva with comprehensive information about the hospital’s laboratories. Bambino Ges¹, founded in 1869 by the Salviati family, is located in Rome and recognized as an extraterritorial institution of the Holy See. Originally a private facility, it is among Italy’s first pediatric hospitals.

The hospital, financed by the Italian state, operates as a public healthcare institution while remaining under the jurisdiction of the Holy See. It is directly accountable to it. In 2006, Bambino Ges¹ was accredited by the Joint Commission International as an academic hospital. It is now renowned as Europe’s largest children’s hospital and research center.

The San Paolo branch, serving as the main hub for the hospital’s extensive research laboratories, is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies for genetic and cellular research. This branch also includes a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility where advanced treatment methods are applied. Clinical diagnoses are cross-verified with genetic analyses, facilitating the implementation of personalized medical approaches through metabolic research.

On September 10, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation was signed between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Holy See’s Bambino Ges¹ Pediatric Hospital. This partnership aims to significantly contribute to research development in rare diseases, molecular genetics, clinical diagnostics, and related fields in Azerbaijan.

The cooperation will provide Azerbaijani scientists and researchers with opportunities to gain experience in advanced scientific methods and conduct research in state-of-the-art laboratories. This will lead to the establishment of specialists capable of independent scientific studies in these areas and the creation of new laboratories meeting international standards in Azerbaijan. Additionally, the partnership includes training and exchange programs for Azerbaijani healthcare professionals.
