Excise Taxes on Tobacco Products Increased in Azerbaijan

Baku: Excise taxes on tobacco products have been increased in Azerbaijan this year, it was reflected in the amendments to the Tax Code approved by President Ilham Aliyev, APA reports. The excise rate on products intended for inhalation without smoking and containing tobacco or reconstituted tobacco has been increased from 16 manats to 25.5 manats per thousand units for domestic production and imports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this change reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to regulate the tobacco industry and potentially reduce tobacco consumption through higher taxation. The increase in excise taxes is a significant adjustment, impacting both local manufacturers and importers of tobacco products. The government’s decision to raise these taxes is part of a broader strategy to align with international health standards and address public health concerns associated with tobacco use.

The amendments to the Tax Code suggest a move towards more stringent control over tobacco products, which could have implications for the market dynamics and pricing strategies within the country. The increased tax rates are expected to influence the cost of tobacco products, thereby affecting consumer behavior and possibly leading to a decrease in tobacco consumption. The new tax rates have been applied uniformly to both domestically produced and imported tobacco products, underscoring the government’s commitment to a comprehensive approach in its taxation policy.
