Deputy Minister Highlights Impact of Zangezur Corridor on Regional Trade Potential

Islamabad: The Regional Transport Ministers’ Conference is underway in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, with Azerbaijan represented by Rahman Hummatov, the Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport. The event has attracted participation from 27 countries, focusing on the development of transport links across the region.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Deputy Minister Rahman Hummatov addressed the conference, elaborating on the progress of transport corridors in Azerbaijan and the broader region. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s strategic position as a vital transit hub that bridges Europe with Central and South Asia, thanks to its location at the intersection of East-West and North-South routes. Azerbaijan has made significant investments in infrastructure, establishing a comprehensive multimodal transport network. In 2024, the total transit volume surged 2.5 times compared to 2019, reaching 14.5 million tons, with nearly 30% of this cargo transported via the Middle Corridor.

Hummatov underscored the significance of the Zangazur Corridor, noting its pivotal role not only in the East-West trajectory but also in enhancing North-South and South-West connections. The corridor is anticipated to facilitate the transportation of 15 million tons of cargo annually, thereby substantially boosting the regional trade capacity.

During the conference, Deputy Minister Hummatov engaged in several bilateral meetings, exploring cooperation opportunities and discussing ongoing projects within the transport sector in Azerbaijan and the surrounding region.
