Climate Action in Tourism Discussed at Baku Conference

Baku: Today, within the framework of the 71st session of the UN World Tourism Organization’s European Regional Commission held in Baku, a thematic conference on “From Crisis to Rise: Advancing Climate Action in Tourism after COP29” was organized. The conference focused on integrating the tourism sector into both national and global climate policies, with the aim of expanding climate measures in the tourism sector post-COP29.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the conference underscored the necessity to accelerate climate actions in tourism, aiming to reduce emissions and promote sustainable tourism practices across the European region. It also highlighted the importance of mobilizing the necessary resources for a green transition. The Glasgow Declaration and the “COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Climate Action in the Tourism Sector” were noted as key frameworks encouraging government bodies, private businesses, and other stakeholders to adopt carbon emissions reduction strategies.

The event featured panel sessions on “Mitigation – Practical Steps for the Future of Low-Carbon Tourism” and “Adaptation – Preparing Tourism for a Changing Climate.” These sessions delved into decarbonization in tourism, offering practical approaches and solutions for measuring and reducing emissions, managing climate risks such as sea-level rise and extreme weather conditions, and using sustainable infrastructure. Discussions also included how to integrate adaptation measures into tourism planning.

Additionally, the conference addressed the measures taken in Azerbaijan’s tourism sector against climate change, including the development of a “Climate Action Plan for Tourism” and the application of sustainable infrastructure principles in tourism development.
