BP Unveils Advanced Deepwater Intervention Technology in Caspian Region

Baku: BP, as the operator of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) field, is set to bring advanced deepwater intervention technology to the Caspian region, focusing on enhancing production and maximizing recovery from the reservoir. These efforts aim to extend the operational life of this world-class resource.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, BP is preparing to launch a multi-well subsea intervention campaign in the Deepwater Gunashli (DWG) area. This campaign will mark the first deployment of riserless light well intervention (RLWI) technology in BP’s Caspian operations, utilizing the Blue Ocean Riserless Intervention System (BORIS) from Oceaneering International. This system is expected to facilitate efficient surveillance and early identification of opportunities for pressure management and production rate enhancement.

To enable earlier subsea interventions and reduce reliance on semisubmersible drilling rigs, the campaign will utilize a vessel-based intervention method. Azerbaijan’s subsea construction vessel Khankendi has been chosen as the platform for this operation. BP has awarded two major contracts to support the campaign: a multi-million dollar contract to Oceaneering International for RLWI services, and another to SLB for light well intervention services.

Offshore operations are anticipated to commence later this year, with completion targeted for the end of 2026. Russell Morrice, BP’s vice president, wells, for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Trkiye, expressed confidence in the RLWI technology and its potential benefits for subsea well management in the region.
