Baku:The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has expressed strong condemnation of the French Senate’s recent decision to reject constitutional reforms that would grant autonomy to Corsica. Abbas Abbasov, the Executive Director of BIG, stated that this decision reflects a “colonial mindset” within French political circles and disregards the will of the Corsican people, highlighting a dissonance between France’s declarations on self-determination and its actual policies.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Abbasov emphasized that the events on October 26, 2026, reveal the French government’s unwillingness to acknowledge the Corsican people’s right to self-governance and cultural preservation. He criticized the removal of provisions from the draft legislation that recognized Corsica’s unique historical, linguistic, and cultural identity, asserting that this demonstrates the French political elite’s reluctance to acknowledge the collective identity of the Corsican people.
The Baku Initiative Group denounced France’s portrayal of Corsican autonomy demands as a threat to national unity, calling it absurd. The group insists that the Corsican people’s demands are legitimate and that the real threat is the central government’s consistent rejection of these demands. BIG called on France to respect Corsica’s political, cultural, and linguistic rights and urged the international community to address the situation faced by the Corsican people.
