Baku:AzerGold CJSC has introduced a new series of gold and silver coins dedicated to the Kalbajar district, aiming to honor the region’s natural environment, mineral springs, historical significance, and cultural heritage.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the design of the coins incorporates traditional national motifs that celebrate Kalbajar’s cultural legacy, natural aesthetics, folklore traditions, and folk crafts. A notable feature of the coins is the ornamentation from a late 19th-century flat-woven mafrash, a traditional storage bag from Kalbajar, with a border inspired by a honeycomb pattern, highlighting the area’s ancient beekeeping and famous mountain honey. Additionally, the coins display 17 symmetrical lines representing the frets of the saz, a nod to the region’s Ashiq music traditions.
The commemorative coins are crafted from 999.9 fine gold and silver extracted in Azerbaijan. The gold coins are available in 5, 10, and 20 grams, while the silver coin weighs 20 grams. These coins reflect Kalbajar’s historical memory and its vision for future development, represented through modern numismatic art.
The Kalbajar collection is available for purchase at AzerGold’s Sales and Exchange Center in Baku and online. AzerGold has been manufacturing coins and gold bars from locally mined metals since 2018, with retail sales commencing in 2019. With the Kalbajar series, AzerGold’s portfolio now includes 27 commemorative collections comprising 15 gold and 12 silver coin designs.
