Baku:President Ilham Aliyev underscored Azerbaijan’s humanitarian approach during his speech at the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). He stated that Azerbaijan did not descend to the level of “barbarians and child killers” during the conflict, as noted by MP Hikmat Babaoghlu in a statement to APA.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the MP emphasized the significance of this stance in understanding Azerbaijan’s political position both during and after the conflict. President Aliyev’s remarks reflect Azerbaijan’s commitment to maintaining legal and moral principles in its conduct, even amidst the tragedies experienced during the war.
Hikmat Babaoghlu highlighted that wars are judged not only by military actions but also by the treatment of civilians, adherence to international humanitarian law, and efforts to build peace post-conflict. He pointed out that Azerbaijan chose not to retaliate with similar methods to those it claims were used against it, despite the severe consequences endured by the Azerbaijani people.
The MP further stressed that the strength of a state is not solely determined by its military might. During wartime, the protection of civilians and respect for international obligations are crucial indicators of a state’s policy. President Aliyev’s speech conveyed that Azerbaijan acted within the framework of state responsibility and legal principles, rather than driven by revenge.
Babaoghlu also remarked on the importance of upholding international humanitarian law principles in modern international relations. He noted that President Aliyev’s speech highlighted the humanitarian aspects of the conflict and the need to remember the suffering of those affected by the war.
In the post-conflict period, Babaoghlu pointed out that Azerbaijan’s primary goal is to strengthen enduring peace and security in the region. Establishing mutual trust, respecting borders, complying with international law, and fostering cooperation are essential steps towards this goal. President Aliyev’s statements at the CICA Summit underscore Azerbaijan’s commitment to these principles, ensuring that past lessons inform future peace efforts while protecting civilian safety and fostering international relations based on law.
