Azerbaijani State Tax Inspector Faces Pre-Trial Detention Over Bribery Allegations

Ganja:Baku An official of the State Tax Service under Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy has been arrested on charges of bribery, following a joint statement by the Main Anti-Corruption Directorate under the Prosecutor General and the State Tax Service.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan is actively working to prevent illegal actions by officials. The focus is on combating violations of the law committed during tax inspections.

A criminal case has been initiated under the relevant article of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This action followed an operational-search operation conducted by the Main Anti-Corruption Directorate based on information received from the State Tax Service. This information pertained to the illegal actions of one of its officials.

Investigations revealed that Rufat Aliyev, a state tax inspector, allegedly received a bribe from an entrepreneur in Ganja in September 2026. The bribe was purportedly in exchange for imposing a lower financial penalty during a tax inspection. Consequently, Aliyev was charged under Article 311.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which addresses accepting a bribe by an official in exchange for illegal actions or inaction. The court has ordered his pre-trial detention at the request of the investigative body and the supervising prosecutor.

The authorities have stated that investigative and operational measures are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the illegal activities and to ensure that all individuals involved are held accountable.
