Azerbaijani Leader Criticizes European Parliament’s Stance on Peace Process

Yerevan: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has accused the European Parliament of sabotaging the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, rather than supporting it. In his video address at the European Political Community summit in Armenia, President Aliyev expressed his dissatisfaction with the European Parliament’s approach, as reported by the APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev thanked the European Commission for its support in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process, but criticized other European institutions, notably the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), for not sharing the same stance. Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s long-standing membership in the Council of Europe since January 2001, noting that Azerbaijan’s delegation faced no restrictions until January 2024. He pointed out that in September 2023, Azerbaijan independently acted on four UN Security Council resolutions from 1993 regarding Garabagh, which had been unresolved for 30 years. Aliyev condemned PACE’s imposition of sanctions on the Azerbaijani delegation four months later, describing the double standards as unacceptable when it came to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

Aliyev criticized the European Parliament for adopting 14 resolutions against Azerbaijan between May 2021 and April 2026, which he described as being filled with insults and lies. He argued that the European Parliament should focus on addressing issues within its member states, such as xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, migration, competitiveness, and homelessness, rather than targeting Azerbaijan. He attributed the European Parliament’s actions to Azerbaijan’s restoration of territorial integrity and sovereignty, its end to separatism, and its efforts to bring war criminals to justice. In response, the Azerbaijani Parliament decided on May 1st to suspend cooperation with the European Parliament, cease participation in the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and begin procedures to terminate its membership in the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. Aliyev emphasized the importance of transparency and accurate information among summit participants to prevent misinformation or manipulation rega
rding Azerbaijan’s decisions.
