Baku: The recent decision by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan to suspend ties with the European Parliament has been described as a strategic move to protect national interests, according to MP Vugar Iskandarov, speaking to APA. The decision reflects a long-standing policy rooted in Azerbaijan’s national priorities.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Iskandarov emphasized that the decision was not made in haste but is the culmination of ongoing issues and the European Parliament’s perceived bias against Azerbaijan. This stance is marked by the European Parliament’s history of non-objective and politically motivated actions towards the country. Despite Azerbaijan’s repeated appeals for fairness, the European Parliament has persisted in its criticisms, which have systematically eroded trust and cooperation.
The decision by the Milli Majlis serves as a political statement, highlighting Azerbaijan’s rejection of foreign interference in its internal affairs. It illustrates a firm stance on sovereignty, with the suspension of participation in several interparliamentary forums and committees. This move underscores the importance Azerbaijan places on equal partnerships in international relations, and the summoning of the EU ambassador with a protest note further signifies Azerbaijan’s diplomatic response to ongoing tensions.
Iskandarov also pointed out that lobbying and double standards have heavily influenced the European Parliament’s actions. He referenced President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks on the lobbying activities within the institution, especially from Armenian and Islamophobic groups, which have skewed its decisions against Azerbaijan. These influences have resulted in numerous resolutions aimed at pressuring Azerbaijan and tarnishing its global image, despite the country’s efforts to foster regional peace following the Second Karabakh War.
Furthermore, Iskandarov highlighted the European Parliament’s recent involvement in corruption scandals, which have severely impacted its credibility. Such incidents question the institution’s moral authority to judge other countries’ democratic practices. The MP criticized the European Parliament’s role in exacerbating regional tensions, suggesting that its actions encourage revanchist sentiments and threaten the fragile stability in the region.
Azerbaijan remains committed to its independent foreign policy, prioritizing national interests and sovereignty. The decision by the Milli Majlis is a testament to Azerbaijan’s resolve to pursue international relations based on mutual respect and to resist any biased approaches from external entities.
