Azerbaijan Railways Targets Emission Reduction with Decarbonization Project

Baku: Azerbaijan has launched an ambitious decarbonization project aimed at significantly reducing national greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050. Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, announced this initiative during a presentation in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (AIB).

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rustamov emphasized that Azerbaijan Railways’ (ADY) contribution to the country’s total emissions is minimal, accounting for less than 0.5%. Despite this, ADY is committed to playing a significant role in achieving the national targets of reducing emissions by 35% by 2030 and 40% by 2050.

Rustamov highlighted that railway transport remains the most environmentally friendly form of mass transportation. He noted that while ADY’s share of emissions is small, the measures they are implementing are crucial for future sustainability. The decarbonization project is part of the broader ‘2030 Strategic Directions’, which focuses on priorities such as Decarbonization, Digitalization, Corridor Competitiveness, and Safety.

The project with the AIB is seen as a pivotal tool in transforming strategic plans into actionable steps, underscoring ADY’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable transportation solutions.
