Azerbaijan Proposes Changes to Military Retirement Age Criteria

Accra:A new proposal to amend the Law ‘On Labor Pensions’ was discussed in the Milli Majlis, suggesting that the retirement age for military personnel be determined by the maximum service age for each rank.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the current law provides an old-age labor pension to military personnel from the date of discharge, based on various criteria such as years of service and specific circumstances like illness or involvement in the Chernobyl disaster cleanup. The proposed draft aims to assign the old-age labor pension upon reaching the maximum age for service in peacetime for each rank.

The draft also introduces changes to pension calculations. While currently, pensions are assigned after discharge, the proposal specifies that pensions will not be recalculated based on the latest maintenance allowance or rank, with certain exceptions. Additionally, a new procedure will be established to provide information on income for compulsory state social insurance, which will determine the insurance component of old-age and disability pensions.

The amendment was put to a vote and adopted in the third reading, marking a significant change in how military pensions are managed in Azerbaijan.
