Azerbaijan Parliament Set to Elect New Ombudsman

Baku:A new ombudsman is set to be elected in Azerbaijan, with the issue included in the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting of the Human Rights Committee of the Milli Majlis, the Azerbaijani Parliament.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the election process is guided by the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” The Commissioner is elected for a term of seven years, and thirty days before the expiration of the current Commissioner’s term, the President submits three candidates to the Milli Majlis for consideration. The parliament is then required to make a decision on the election within 15 days. Notably, the same individual cannot serve as Commissioner for more than two terms.

Sabina Aliyeva was the most recent Ombudsman, elected on November 29, 2019, from among three candidates nominated by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
