Azerbaijan Outlines Three-Phase Strategy for Water Resource Efficiency

Baku: In Azerbaijan, the “National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources” is set to be executed in three distinct phases from 2024 to 2040, as reported by the State Water Resources Agency of Azerbaijan to APA-Economics during Baku Water Week.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the first phase, scheduled for 2024-2027, will focus on enhancing the infrastructure and management systems for efficient water use. This phase aims to integrate management practices, increase water resources, and improve the utilization of water resources in the Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur economic regions. Additionally, the management of wastewater and rainwater, improvement of water quality, expansion of economic facilities, and reduction of water losses will be prioritized.

In the second phase, planned for 2028-2030, the priorities of Azerbaijan’s water management will align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This includes focusing on clean water and sanitation, climate change mitigation, marine ecosystem protection, and land ecosystem management.

The third phase, spanning 2031-2040, will emphasize the efficient management of water resources using innovative technologies. This phase aims at increasing water resources and meeting the demands of the population and economy for high-quality water through alternative sources.
