Azerbaijan Introduces Climate Change Measures in Agricultural Legislation

Baku:For the first time, Azerbaijan is incorporating measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change within its agricultural legislation. This development was reported by APA and involves the draft law ‘On the Agricultural Sector,’ which was recently discussed in the Milli Majlis.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the draft law outlines several strategies to address climate change impacts in agriculture. These include the management and reuse of agricultural waste, establishing protective forest belts, and applying eco-friendly technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The law also promotes the use of low-emission agricultural machinery and projects aimed at emission reduction in livestock farming. Additionally, it emphasizes raising awareness about climate change impacts and enhancing international cooperation.

The draft law also proposes adaptation measures such as developing climate-resilient plant varieties and animal breeds, setting up early warning systems for hazardous weather events, and efficiently using water resources, including alternative sources. The legislation was successfully adopted in its first reading.
