Azerbaijan Holds Critical Meeting on Climate Change Policy

Baku: A meeting of the State Commission on Climate Change was held today, the Cabinet of Ministers told APA. Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Commission Samir Sharifov opened the meeting, noting Azerbaijan’s active participation in addressing global climate challenges since joining the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Azerbaijan remains committed to its obligations under the Paris Agreement, having set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The country aims for a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2035 compared to 1990, as outlined in its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document. This commitment underscores Azerbaijan’s consistent policy toward adopting a low-carbon development model and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The meeting highlighted the significance of the COP29 conference, held in Baku from November 11-22, 2024, where crucial and historical decisions on unresolved issues were made. Chairman Samir Sharifov concluded the meeting by mandating the preparation of an action plan for the upcoming 31st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Additionally, an interagency working group will be formed to enhance the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and to draft the ‘Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan On Climate’ and the ‘Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy’ projects.
