Azerbaijan Eyes Major Boost in Regional Electricity Generation Capacity

Baku: Azerbaijan is set to become a leading country in electricity generation capacity within the region, President Ilham Aliyev announced during the opening ceremony of the 240 MW ‘Khizi-Absheron’ Wind Power Plant. Constructed by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power, this facility was inaugurated at the Gulustan Palace in Baku.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, President Aliyev emphasized the ongoing development of renewable energy sources across various parts of Azerbaijan. New large plants are planned for Bilasuvar, Neftchala, Nakhchivan, and the liberated territories, complementing existing installations in the Garadagh district, Khizi, and Absheron district.

President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s geographical advantage, which supports the production of renewable energy in any region, and underscored the significant wind potential of the Caspian Sea. International estimates suggest that the wind capacity in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea is around 157 gigawatts. The President expressed confidence that this process will accelerate in the coming years, positioning Azerbaijan as a reliable and major electricity generator in the region.

President Aliyev also extended an invitation to foreign investors to invest not only in the energy sector but also in areas demanding substantial electricity, such as artificial intelligence, data centers, and other energy-intensive fields. He encouraged Azerbaijani companies to participate in this expansion as well.
