Azerbaijan Determines Inmate Categories for Six-Month Sentence Reduction Under Amnesty

Baku: The categories of convicted individuals eligible for a six-month reduction in their sentences under Azerbaijan’s latest amnesty have been officially defined. This decision was revealed following the adoption of the parliamentary resolution titled ‘On declaring an amnesty in connection with the ‘Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty,” during the Milli Majlis’s recent session.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the resolution specifies that the sentences of certain convicts will be decreased by six months. The affected groups include those sentenced to a fixed term for committing less serious offenses, provided their remaining sentence as of the decision’s effective date exceeds one year. Additionally, individuals sentenced to more than five years for serious crimes due to negligence will see reductions if their remaining sentence exceeds six months.

The amnesty excludes individuals who fall under the law ‘On the restriction of the application of amnesty acts.’ The initiative for this amnesty was proposed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
