Tashkent: Azerbaijan’s relations with Central Asia have, in recent years, gone beyond the classic format of bilateral cooperation and gained deeper, institutional, and strategic substance. This dynamic is not limited to political dialogue alone – it has become one of the key directions in shaping the region’s new geopolitical architecture. Built on historical, cultural, and moral affinity, Azerbaijan-Central Asia relations are today turning into a fundamental element of a broader political construct. As a logical continuation of this trend, President Ilham Aliyev has been invited several times to the Consultative Meetings of the Heads of State of Central Asia. Today, he participated in this prestigious event held in the Uzbek capital.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, speaking at the 7th Consultative Meeting in Tashkent, President Ilham Aliyev stated that although Azerbaijan is geographically located in the South Caucasus, intensive cooperation has transformed it into a unified geopolitical and geoeconomic space together with Central Asia on a global scale. He highlighted that the relations between Azerbaijan and Central Asian states are unique and that they are bound together by a centuries-old history, spiritual and cultural heritage, brotherhood, friendship, and solidarity. He noted the regularity of high-level reciprocal visits and the signing of treaties and declarations on alliance and strategic partnership with Central Asian countries, as well as the establishment of joint investment funds. Cultural exchanges through events such as culture days, exhibitions, and concerts are also strengthening these ties.
Following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, the solidarity demonstrated by Central Asian countries in the reconstruction of liberated regions stands out as a real manifestation of fraternal relations. This solidarity stems from the shared historical heritage, linguistic affinity, and deep cultural roots that unite Azerbaijan with the Central Asian states. These cultural and humanitarian ties are expanding through cultural festivals, literature days, art projects, and youth exchange programs.
President Aliyev expressed appreciation for the support shown by Central Asian countries in the restoration efforts, citing the construction of educational and cultural centers in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories as symbols of this brotherhood. He emphasized that these gestures will remain in the memory of the Azerbaijani people as proof of solidarity, and he pointed out Azerbaijan and Central Asia’s role as a connecting bridge between East and West, North and South.
The inclusion of Azerbaijan as a full-fledged member of the Central Asia cooperation and consultative formats marks a new stage in their relationship. This decision is not merely a political gesture but a step emerging from the region’s real needs, forming a sustainable geopolitical mechanism. Azerbaijan will now permanently participate in the consultative meetings of Central Asian heads of state and will be an official party to platforms held at the level of prime ministers.
President Aliyev expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s accession to the cooperation format, which confirms the friendly and fraternal nature of their relations and will serve to strengthen cooperation and interaction across a vast geographical area. The strategic spaces occupied by Azerbaijan and Central Asia enhance their cooperation potential, despite certain differences in geopolitical identity.
The geopolitical reality brings Azerbaijan closer to joining the Central Asia cooperation format, providing a strategic foundation for the process. The platform helps deepen existing partnership and alliance relations between Central Asian states and Azerbaijan, creating additional opportunities to expand economic and trade ties, strengthen humanitarian and cultural interactions, and enhance integration in transport and logistics. The development of the Middle Corridor is of particular significance, enabling both sides to play a more active role in global trade flows.
Azerbaijan-Central Asia relations today go beyond strategic partnership, representing a comprehensive process moving towards the formation of a unified geopolitical space. This new integration model is poised to become one of the key pillars of regional architecture in the coming decades. Azerbaijan’s role in these processes strengthens interregional connectivity, expands Central Asia’s access to Europe, accelerates political integration in the Turkic world, and creates new elements of stability across the Eurasian space.
President Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan, through close cooperation with Central Asia, is becoming a unified political and economic space of growing global importance. He noted that Azerbaijan and Central Asia today form a single geopolitical and geo-economic region, whose importance in the world is steadily growing. They successfully cooperate within the framework of various international organizations, support each other’s initiatives, and develop common approaches to resolving global and regional issues.
Today, Azerbaijan is no longer an external partner standing outside Central Asia, but a leading actor shaping the region’s development trajectory. This reality further strengthens Baku’s geopolitical standing and makes a significant contribution to the emergence of a new balance of power across Eurasia.
