Nakhchivan: Alinja Castle is a remarkable fortress complex located in the Julfa district of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and is widely regarded as one of Azerbaijan’s most impressive historical landmarks. The earliest written reference to the castle appears in the epic ‘Kitabi Dede Korkut.’
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the castle, which has become a symbol of the Azerbaijani people’s spirit of resistance and patriotism, functioned for centuries both as a defensive fortress and a residential settlement. It is particularly noted for its 14-year resistance against the forces of Amir Timur.
Alinja Castle is recognized as a monument of both national and international significance. In 2007, it was included among globally significant heritage sites. Following major restoration and conservation works carried out between 2014 and 2016, the castle was transformed into an open-air museum and has since become one of the region’s important tourist attractions.
The long stairways leading to the summit, along with breathtaking views from its elevated position-particularly of Mount Hachadag and the Aras River valley-offer visitors a memorable experience. Due to its dramatic setting, Alinja Castle is often described by tourists as the world’s ‘second Machu Picchu.’
Overall, Alinja Castle plays a significant role in preserving Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage and showcasing the resilience and patriotism of its people. With its historical value and tourism potential, it stands as a cultural symbol that preserves the ancient history of Nakhchivan and passes it on to future generations.
