Tabriz: Ajabshir city, located 85 kilometers from Tabriz, faces severe challenges as the drying of Lake Urmia has significantly impacted the region’s agriculture and ecology. Ajabshir, situated at the heart of Ajabshir County, is surrounded by smaller towns like Javan Qala and Qala Chay, and is home to a predominantly Muslim and Shia Azerbaijani Turkish-speaking population.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the drying of Lake Urmia has led to the salinization of over 65% of the wells along its shores, rendering them unusable and forcing many villagers to abandon their homes. This environmental crisis has not only caused substantial financial losses in agriculture but also poses a threat to the region’s ecological balance and the livelihoods of its residents.
Historically, Ajabshir has been rich in cultural and historical significance. Archaeological findings indicate that the area has been inhabited since the Chalcolithic period. Ajabshir was also a favored location during the reign of the Qajar dynasty and was a key hub on the Azerbaijan-Iraq-Sham trade route, a testament to its once-thriving economy.
The current state of Rahmanlu Port, once a bustling center for cargo and passenger ships, is a stark reminder of the region’s decline. The port now lies in ruins, and many former workers have migrated in search of new opportunities.
Despite these challenges, the youth of Southern Azerbaijan are determined to preserve their cultural heritage. They actively engage in efforts to maintain Azerbaijani culture, history, and language, amidst government-imposed restrictions. Their commitment has sparked a renewed sense of identity among the younger generation.
Ajabshir has also been home to notable figures such as Hasan Damirchi, known as Hasan Azerbaijan, who dedicated his life to promoting Azerbaijani music and culture. His legacy continues to inspire the people of Southern Azerbaijan today.
The resilience of Ajabshir’s inhabitants in the face of adversity underscores the enduring spirit of Azerbaijani culture and identity in the region.
