AIR Center Advocates for Media’s Strategic Role in Turkic Unity

Ankara: In shaping the common future of the Turkic world, the media should not only be an information transmitter but also a main actor that creates strategic agendas, said Javid Valiyev, a member of the Board of Directors of the Center of the Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center) during his speech at the Turkic States Forum on Combating Disinformation held in Ankara under the organization of the Communications Directorate of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Trkiye, APA’s correspondent dispatched to Ankara reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Javid Valiyev stated that the discussions around the topic ‘Common Future of the Turkic World and Media’ highlight two main questions: the essence of the common future and the role of the media in this process. He pointed out three main sources that guide the concept of a common future. The first is the idea of Turkic unity, originating in the late 19th – early 20th century, primarily based on language and alphabet unity.

The second source has been identified as the political and institutional decisions adopted by the Turkic states. This includes the Nakhchivan Agreement, the final declarations from summit meetings, and the 2040 Turkic World Vision Document, which were specifically highlighted.

The third source is the statements made by heads of state and foreign ministers regarding the future of the Turkic world. Valiyev noted that almost all country representatives at the forum proposed creating a joint platform for combating disinformation. He suggested that forming such a platform and implementing leadership on a rotational basis among the countries will ultimately lead to institutional unity.

The expert emphasized that unity among the Turkic states is not only due to common language, history, and culture but also a shared destiny. From this perspective, journalists should be aware of this responsibility when preparing news and approach events from a unified viewpoint.

Valiyev highlighted the importance of two main strategies for the media in building the common future of the Turkic world: combating disinformation and agenda-setting. He also pointed out the main risks to this common future, noting that some foreign regions and countries view Turkic unity as a threat, which is promoted both politically and in the media. Consequently, disinformation campaigns are targeted against the idea of Turkic unity.

Javid Valiyev emphasized that 100 years ago, the idea of unity in the Turkic world began to take shape through newspapers and literature. Today, Turkic journalists have real and historical opportunities to complete this unfinished integration process. He asserted that Turkic world politics should be strategic rather than reactive, with the media becoming a main pillar of this strategy.
