AI Accelerates Cyberattack Speed to Critical Levels, Expert Warns

Baku:The development of artificial intelligence technologies has drastically increased the speed at which cyberattacks occur, with some reaching critical stages in as little as 22 seconds. This was highlighted by Nadir Novruzov, Head of Department at the State Service for Special Communication and Information Security, during the 8th Summit of Information Security Leaders.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Novruzov explained that the average time from an initial intrusion to data transfer for encryption has decreased to 22 seconds. Additionally, once an intrusion occurs, it takes only 27 seconds for an attack to spread within a network, while data exfiltration can commence in just four minutes.

Novruzov further noted that cybercriminals now require only 29 minutes to move within a network and expand their attack, marking a 65% increase in speed compared to 2024. He identified the automation of cyberattacks through AI as a key issue, emphasizing that while these attacks are automated, their prevention still requires human intervention.

The rapid pace of these attacks poses significant challenges for timely response and prevention, underscoring the need for enhanced strategies to combat AI-driven cyber threats.
