Agency Chairman Highlights Draining of Lakes and Land Occupation Due to Illegal Expansions

Baku: Several lakes in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula have been drained and the land occupied as a result of illegal expansions, according to Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the State Agency for Water Resources. Mikayilov made these remarks during a meeting focused on water supply in the region.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Mikayilov stated that more than 300 lakes in the area naturally serve as water-retention sites. However, between 2014 and 2025, numerous lakes have been compromised due to both illegal and unplanned expansions. “This, in turn, leads to flooding in these areas and territories when heavy rains occur,” Mikayilov added, emphasizing the potential risks associated with these activities.
