Baku: A conference on the ‘Role of Higher Education in the Climate Transition’ has kicked off at ADA University as part of the Baku Climate Action Week. Addressing the event, Fariz Ismailzade, Vice Rector of ADA University and a Member of Parliament of Azerbaijan, emphasized the importance of discussing education and climate change issues collectively.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Fariz Ismailzade highlighted that discussions on this topic have been ongoing for more than a year, leading to a consensus on the critical role of universities in combating climate change. He stressed that education, research, and youth engagement are essential components in achieving progress in this process. Ismailzade stated that it is crucial to bring together universities, education leaders, and young people to unite their efforts.
Hasan Hasanli, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Science and Education, stressed the significance of young people’s proactive approach to climate issues and the development of new initiatives. The deputy minister explained that the role of higher education in combating climate change goes beyond theoretical knowledge, necessitating the application of practical skills and new technologies.
Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, noted that Baku is organizing such a week for the second time. He remarked that Climate Action Week has become a successful global platform where government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private institutions, universities, and young people collaborate. Babayev mentioned the joint organization of the event with the London Climate Action Week team, highlighting its importance for international cooperation.
COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev also addressed the observations regarding the Caspian Sea level changes, describing this issue as strategically important for the region. He pointed out that observations since the 1970s indicate a significant decline in sea level, posing challenges for coastal settlements, infrastructure, and the economy. Babayev stressed the need to integrate these issues into the education system, raise youth awareness, and apply new scientific approaches.
The event explores the key role played by universities, research institutes, technical training centers, and other higher education institutions in supporting the climate transition.
