Geneva:The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution titled ‘Impact of anti-personnel mines on the full enjoyment of human rights: Strengthening victim assistance,’ which was co-sponsored and actively promoted by Azerbaijan during the 63rd session in Geneva, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the resolution was supported by a total of 70 states as co-sponsors and was adopted without a vote. Azerbaijan played a significant role by organizing a public dialogue to maintain focus on the initiative and co-organizing a side event dedicated to the topic.
Azerbaijan, one of the most heavily mine-contaminated countries, faces significant human rights challenges due to anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordnance. These mines have long-term impacts on victims and their families, making victim assistance a key focus of the resolution.
Mine action is essential for sustainable peace and post-conflict reconstruction, aiding the safe return of internally displaced persons and contributing to the socio-economic development of affected communities. The resolution highlights the importance of mine clearance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and adapting to climate-related risks in the context of human rights.
The resolution calls for increased international support, partnerships, and sustainable financing for mine action and victim assistance, encouraging the use of alternative financing sources and public-private partnerships.
Azerbaijan underscores the need for enhanced international cooperation and values the role of mine action in protecting human rights and promoting sustainable peace and development.
