New York:An international conference titled ‘Right of Return and Decolonization Restoring Delayed Historical Justice’ was held at the United Nations headquarters, focusing on the ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijanis by Armenia.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, this significant event took place during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and was organized by the Baku Initiative Group. It marked the first time this issue was discussed within the UN framework.
The conference gathered more than 50 representatives from 16 countries, including experts on refugee rights and national minorities, diaspora organizations, and UN experts. Discussions centered on enabling the return of Azerbaijanis to their homelands and legal steps to restore historical justice, emphasizing the need for international oversight and monitoring.
A short documentary film on the ethnic cleansing and vandalism against Azerbaijani cultural and religious sites was screened. Key speakers included Ambassador June Soomer, Prabjot Singh Wirring, and Carlyle Corbin, who supported the Azerbaijanis’ right of return and called for international attention.
Participants protested the destruction of Azerbaijani monuments in Armenia. An appeal to appoint a special UN rapporteur was adopted, highlighting the ongoing destruction and appropriation of Azerbaijani heritage and the unfulfilled right of return for displaced Azerbaijanis, which contradicts international law.
