Spanish Architect Highlights Baku’s Investment in Public Spaces and Architecture

Baku: A Spanish architect has expressed that Baku is actively investing in public spaces and contemporary architecture.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the architect visited Baku in 2017 while teaching in Moscow and shortly after serving as Chief Architect of Barcelona. The architect observed Baku’s commitment to improving its urban environment for both residents and visitors, noting significant investments in public spaces, infrastructure, and contemporary architecture aimed at enhancing urban life and the city’s international presence.

The architect emphasized that Baku’s approach to architecture and urban planning connects the city to global cultural and professional conversations while defining its urban identity. The architect also assessed the initiative to establish a ‘Year of Urban Planning and Architecture’ as a positive step from an international professional perspective. The initiative highlights the importance of cities, territories, and the built environment as strategic assets for social well-being, economic innovation, and cultural development.

The architect suggested integrating contemporary Azerbaijani architectural and urban planning projects into the global information space through international platforms such as exhibitions, biennials, conferences, and academic networks. The architect underlined the role of digital communication in increasing international impact and recommended collaboration with international universities, research institutions, and architectural studios.

To strengthen Azerbaijan’s presence on the global architectural map, the architect recommended investing in education, research, and emerging professionals. Supporting experimental and pilot projects, fostering international collaboration, and positioning cities as places of innovation, dialogue, and quality of life are essential steps. These efforts enable architecture and urban planning to contribute meaningfully to international conversations about the future of cities.
