President Ilham Aliyev Calls for Permanent Removal of Section 907 to Enhance US-Azerbaijan Relations

New york: ‘The waiver by President Trump of the sanctions imposed on Azerbaijan in 1992, in the form of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, is a historic step as well,’ said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The head of state emphasized that the permanent removal of Section 907 by the US Congress would eliminate a legacy of double standards and help strengthen trust and cooperation at a time when Azerbaijan is contributing to global security and stability.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, President Aliyev highlighted the significance of removing the restrictions imposed by Section 907, which originally prohibited direct aid to the Azerbaijani government due to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The waiver, first enacted by President Trump, has allowed for the continuation of aid and support, facilitating better cooperation between the two nations.

He further noted that Azerbaijan’s efforts in contributing to global peace and security underscore the need for a lasting solution to the legislative barrier. The President called on the US Congress to consider the benefits of a permanent removal, which he believes would pave the way for enhanced collaboration in various sectors, including economic and security domains.

The appeal from President Aliyev comes at a time when Azerbaijan seeks to bolster its international partnerships and play a more prominent role in the global arena. The removal of Section 907 is seen as a pivotal step in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering mutual trust between Azerbaijan and the United States.
