Shanghai: The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) actively participated in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the High-Level Meeting on AI Governance held in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July 2026. Mr. Abdunur M. Sekindi, Director General of the Science and Technology Department, represented the OIC and engaged with policymakers, international organization leaders, and industry experts to deliberate on the future of artificial intelligence governance.
According to Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the opening ceremony witnessed the presence of heads of state and government, including H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China. Leaders from Kazakhstan, Cambodia, and the United Nations Secretary-General were also in attendance, along with other notable guests. The conference served as a platform for high-level discussions on AI governance.
On the conference sidelines, Mr. Sekindi conducted meetings with various delegation heads and senior Chinese officials. These discussions aimed to explore the OIC’s potential contribution to developing an equitable, safe, and inclusive global AI governance framework that aligns with the values and priorities of OIC Member States.
Mr. Sekindi also consulted with representatives from the Arab League, the African Union, and the Gulf Cooperation Council to exchange experiences and best practices. These consultations are part of the effort to inform the development of the OIC AI Vision, which the General Secretariat is currently preparing.
During the engagements, Mr. Sekindi emphasized the OIC’s commitment to ensuring AI development and governance benefit humanity, address the digital divide, and foster cooperation among Member States in science, technology, and innovation. The OIC’s participation highlights its resolve to influence international AI dialogue and ensure the perspectives of the Islamic world are incorporated into emerging global standards and policies.
