Baku: As of August 31, 2026, 4,010 Azerbaijani citizens are registered as missing persons in connection with the First and Second Karabakh Wars, the State Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons said, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, 4,004 individuals went missing during the First Karabakh War, while 6 remain unaccounted for from the Second Karabakh War. Among those missing from the First Karabakh War, 3,222 are military personnel and 782 are civilians, including 71 children, 288 women, and 319 elderly persons.
The State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons is actively conducting systematic searches to locate missing persons, exhume remains, identify them, and return them to their families. In August 2026, the remains of 5 individuals were uncovered and exhumed, increasing the total to 910. Additionally, the remains of 21 identified persons were returned to their families for burial, raising the total to 267. The number of missing persons identified through DNA and forensic methods stands at 328, and 32 mass burial sites have been discovered to date.
From January to August 2026, the remains of 79 people were discovered and exhumed, 57 missing persons were identified, and the remains of 64 people were returned to their families for burial. As of now, 3,682 individuals are still considered missing.
