Baku: On September 11, a solemn ceremony marking Mexico’s Independence Day was held in Shusha with the participation of representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan. The event commenced with the performance of the national anthems of Mexico and Azerbaijan.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Maria Victoria Romero Caballero, Mexican Ambassador to Azerbaijan, addressed the event, highlighting that Azerbaijan and Mexico are expanding their political dialogue, strengthening institutional contacts, and demonstrating mutual interest in new opportunities for cooperation. The ambassador emphasized that recent visits by Azerbaijani delegations to Mexico have provided new momentum to bilateral relations.
Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, spoke at the ceremony, underscoring Mexico’s principled support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during the occupation. Hajiyev noted that the relationship between Azerbaijan and Mexico is rooted in mutual respect and adherence to the norms and principles of international law.
He highlighted that Mexico’s firm support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity was crucial during the occupation, stating that these principles form the foundation of Azerbaijan-Mexico relations. Hajiyev further remarked on the continuation of political consultations and dialogue between the two countries, pointing out that they share common positions on numerous international issues.
The celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day in Shusha for the second time was noted by Hajiyev as laying the groundwork for a new tradition in Azerbaijan-Mexico relations. He remarked that the liberation of Azerbaijan’s territories has opened new cities and venues for diplomatic activities, enriching the country’s diplomatic landscape. He invited foreign diplomatic missions to participate in similar initiatives in Shusha and other Azerbaijani cities in the future.
The event also featured traditional Mexican dances alongside performances showcasing Azerbaijan’s rich musical heritage. Shusha, recognized as Azerbaijan’s cultural capital, has become a prominent venue for diplomatic meetings and international events. Hosting Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations and other national holidays underscores the city’s growing political and diplomatic importance.
