Lionel Messi Retires from International Football with Farewell Victory

Buenos Aires:Lionel Messi concluded his international football career on Tuesday with a memorable final appearance for Argentina in their 3-0 friendly victory over Benin.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Messi scored a late penalty, marking his 126th international goal, and assisted with second-half goals by Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz. The Monumental Stadium saw over 80,000 fans gather to bid farewell to the player who was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup and two Copa America triumphs.

Messi entered the field for his 208th and final appearance for Argentina, accompanied by his three children, as his wife and mother watched from the stands. The match paused in the 10th minute for a standing ovation in honor of Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer.

Throughout the second half, Messi took in the atmosphere as chants of “Messi, don’t leave, we’re not ready to say goodbye” echoed around the stadium. Post-match, a drone display illuminated the Buenos Aires sky with images of Messi and messages of gratitude for his 21-year international career.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and midfielder Enzo Fernandez were visibly moved as Messi delivered an emotional speech, expressing his reluctance to leave and his pride in fulfilling his dreams with the national team.

Messi had announced his retirement plans in August, following his father’s death and Argentina’s World Cup final loss to Spain. Reflecting on the World Cup, he lamented being so close to victory and commended his teammates for their efforts.

While Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami, where his contract runs until December 2028, he promised to support Argentina from afar and encouraged fans to back the emerging talents in the national team.
